Forgotten Gems: 50/50

SEEDS
50/50 - Seeds

Can a film about cancer be funny?  Normally, it's one of those topics that Hollywood tends to stay away from when it comes to comedy.  Sure, you have "Terms of Endearment" which is thought of as one of the best films in the last 30 years, but cancer doesn't always equal comedy.  While I won't consider "50/50" in the same class of "Terms" it's still a film that takes the subject of cancer, and disease in general, and combines it with humor, though sometimes crass, and hope.  It also plants the seeds for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, where you really get to see him act in a big time way.

"50/50" is the story of Adam, a twentysomething working at a NPR-like radio station in Seattle. Cutting to the chase, after visiting a doctor for some unexplained aches and pains he learns that he has a rare type of cancer (isn't it always a rare type of cancer in any film?)  With the help of his friend Kyle, Adam tries to look on the bright side of life even with his personal life crumbling around him as well as his well-intentioned mother's constantly harassment, and father dealing with Alzheimer's Disease.  When it rains it pours, I guess?

The film also stars Anna Kendrick as Adam's psychologist, Katherine, who I think does a fine job and adds something special to "50/50."  What I will add is that I'm a little confused about all the hate that Kendrick gets for the roles she takes.  I mean she's no Jennifer Lawrence, but she's just as awkward as J-Law, but people take her as a bitch for some reason.  She only has a handful of roles to her credit, including an Academy Award nominated performance for her first *real* role in "Up In the Air" but I'm not sure why so many people complain about her acting.  She has her own style, and despite the fact that several of the characters that she plays are moody or quirky-outsider types in the early 20's, I think she does the best she does with the writing that is provided for her.  As for her performance in "50/50" Kendrick continues to show that when given material she can really shine, see "End of Watch" for further evidence that she has a bright future as a new type of "the girl next door."

Moving away from my Anna Kendrick rant and back to "50/50,"  the other thing that struck me with the film is the honesty in which cancer is dealt with.  While at heart the film is a "comedy" there are some real human elements to the film, namely unexpected loss, coming to grips with situations you have no control over, and re-establishing old relationships, and building new ones.  Gordon-Levitt conveys an honest performance and is still able to pull a few decent laughs from a situation that rarely leaves room for humor.  Seth Rogen, usually the funniest guy in the room, manages to still be the comic relief of the film, but he shows some of his acting chops as a friend who is trying to turn his friend's tragedy into his own gain, but still show some compassion as a best friend.

Overall, "50/50" is a fine film that shines a light on a disease that most people try to stray away from.  To be honest, I think there are more films about the plight of people suffering from AIDS then people suffering from cancer, a far more relatable disease to be honest with you.  I'm sure in our lives we have met someone, been friends with, or have had a family member that has fought cancer.  Of course I'm not taking anything away from people who suffer from HIV/AIDS, but Hollywood seems to make have a "mythic" obsession with the AIDS virus, while cancer is almost a dirty word to most people.  So, if you've yet to see "50/50" it's certainly worth a watch just to see some young actors dealing with, and executing some of the heaviest acting that most of them had to deal with up to that point.

*I don't consider anything "Twilight" related a real role by an actor or actress that wants to be taken serious.

Fun Fact:  Actors Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall have both played cancer patients in previous films Watchmen and Magnolia, respectively.

This is Halloween: Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus: Immortal

96mins/Family-Comedy/1993

As a kid growing up in the 90's things were pretty awesome in the world of film and TV. Disney had a gold mine of 90's kids movies that became instant classics to us of the 90's and we still hold that to ring true to this very day. If you go to a flea market, I can almost guarantee you will see a flood of Disney VHS for sell. They were cranking them out every single week, sure a few kinda suck but a good majority of them are classics children films that as a "adult" now I still find myself watching every now and then.

Hocus Pocus is one of them. And every year in October this is a film I pop in and watch. Why because its fantastic. It holds up well and still allows me to dive into a bit of excitement that a children's Halloween film should. They don't make films like this anymore. Halloween films are made mostly for teens and adults these days. The younger children don't get the focus anymore. Sure when I was 7 I was watching Freddy frighten teens in their nightmares and Leatherface doing what he does best with a door and hammer, but that's that. Some kids can't do that. And honestly shouldn't experience that stuff at such a young age. But hey I turned out somewhat... decent.

After 300 years, Three sister witches are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it us up to two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to the witches reign of terror once and for all. (IMDB)

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Park and Kathy Najimy star as the three sister witches, who steal the souls of children! Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Vinessa Shaw are the hero's who go up against the witches. The three witches steal the show with their goofy antics and song, "I Put a spell on you" that will be stuck in your head. Thora Birch's acting stands out good. She's young and doesn't turn in to one of those annoying forced line delivering children actors can sometimes bring.  The cast works pretty well and only add to the wonder of a story Disney put out.

Hocus Pocus is a incredibly well-made film that brings the scary part and fun part together and a well wrapped candy bar for a kids eyes and mind. It single handle brings back the excitement that seems to have been lost anymore during Halloween. It's a simple story about putting a end to the witches, which is place on top of a brother and sister relationship that I find mean more to me then any other film when I watch with my sister. Sure if you might not have watched this film before then it might be hard to understand now as a adult. But when you watch this when your young and grow up from it, then it becomes something more. Its a fun film to watch that doesn't get made as much but luckily its immortal and seems to last forever.

Big Fan

Big Fan: Intense   ...But fun.

88mins/Comedy/Drama/2009

Patton Oswalt plays a lovable but passionate fan of his football team. Not just any football team, but his New York Giants. To him no other team should even exist on this earth. But then one day his favorite player kicks the crap out of him. This puts him in a bad place.

Emotionally he becomes unstable and it leads to a place that surprised me at first.  He has to pick between him or his football team and the way it plays out was pretty awesome.

This is a film that I couldn't really guess what came next. So many films anymore are very predicable. Patton Oswalt really shines in this film. This may be a comedy slash drama, but I would really like to see him go more toward the drama end. He really just fit this film in such a way I couldn't see anyone else play. Micheal Rapaport and Kevin Corrigan also star, both hold a screen present not too many can. The ending will leave a smile on your face and wanting more. I would also like more from director and writer, Robert D. Siegel who on top of this wrote, The Wrestler. Both films I enjoyed and only wish we got more of his work.

Been a fan of Oswalt for the longest time, and this film might just sealed it for you as well.

It's a Disaster

It's a Disaster: Splendid

2012 / 88 min / Comedy | Drama

If you're looking for a film to watch this week I found it.

With all the crap that is around these days on TV and even in the theater, check out; It's a Disaster.

The film itself is far from being a disaster. It's very witty, funny and down right enjoyable.

It's Splendid.

My favorite part of the whole film is how it does a turn in the story. At first you're presented with a simple friends meeting to have dinner type of film. You know the type. Each character is having his and hers relationship problems, cheating and simply falling out of love. Everyone knows each other, there all good friends and this is something they have been doing for quiet a while now.

The only new person at the table is David Cross, who I've always thought steals the show of which he's on, even in interviews, he just steals the spotlight in his funny way.

The dialogue is lovely and the random characters like the next door neighbor and the call center guy, don't just pop up without the viewer noticing. They pop up and steal the scenes making you laugh.

There is a ton in this film that I feel will make you smile ear to ear and keep your eyes glued to your TV.

The ending might upset a few, but I thought it was just downright perfect... Enjoy!

Nature Calls

Nature Calls: Ouch

79 min  -  Comedy (?)  -  2012

So one night a friend and I went on Netflix looking for a film to watch. You know, late night snacking with a “funny” movie playing, drinking beers and pissing the night away. When we finished watching this film we both could not help but wonder why we watched the whole damn thing. It’s such a crappy film, I think we both were in a shocked state of mind.

Polar-opposite brothers Randy and Kirk never saw eye-to-eye, but their rivalry is taken to a new level when Randy hijacks Kirk's son's sleepover, taking the boys on a Scout Trip to remember. (IMDB)

So why does this film suck so much?

It’s a comedy film that has maybe 12 seconds of funny in it. Out of the 79mins only 12 seconds is funny? Well I’m not sure how that can be counted as a comedy film.

I mean, Schindler’s List was funnier…

With a cast like Nature Calls I think I’m angrier that it’s as bad as it is.

Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville, Rob Riggie, Darrell Hammond and Patrice O’Neal (his last film).

And this film still sucks? I like the story, the actors but the script just wasn’t ready and maybe could have been worked on by its awesome cast.

If you come across it one night, Skip it.

Simplistic Reviews Presents: Cinema and Suds, A Film Quadruple-header and Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer

When I think of pizza I automatically think of beer.  Nothing goes better with a slice of pepperoni and mushroom than an ice cold beer.  We also know that beer goes with movies, but what happens when you combine pizza, beer, and movies?  Episode 2 of Cinema and Suds happens.

What I'm sure started out as a joke, has become a reality for beer and pizza lovers; PIZZA BEER!  Yes, pizza beer, folks.  A beer that tastes and smells like an actual pizza.  You might be thinking; were these people stoned when they came up with the concept to combine pizza and beer into one convenient 16 oz. bottle.  Probably, but you know what else goes great with pizza and beer.....I'll leave that up to you of course.

So, you got your Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer in your glass (hopefully a wine glass since this is such a classy beer) now it's time to pick a film.  You could go the safe route and pick "The Godfather" or "Goodfellas" but where's the fun in that?  You've got a damn Pizza Beer in your hand!  Be adventurous, or since you're already pizza drunk (you might need a few of these since the ABV only clocks in at 4.7%) and don't care what you're watching, why not pop in one of these classics, and I have four of them for you today.

Why not start the night with "Date Night" starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell.  Continue on with "Superbad" followed up by "Spaceballs."  And why not finish up the night with "The Thing" considering the fact that by this time you'll be talking to Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer asking, "What is this thing?" Or, "How and why did they make this thing?"

Enjoy the video companion to this review, and check back every week for another edition of Cinema and Suds.

This is the End

FRIENDS
This is the End - Friends

Modern comedy falls into three groupings; buddy comedies (The Internship) re-hash comedies (any of The Hangover films) and comedy that came from the penis of Judd Apatow.  If it wasn't for Apatow you could say that comedy would be dead.  Coming from a generation that thought "The Cable Guy" was one of the best comedies of the 1990s, that pretty much sums it up.  But what happens when you get a film that doesn't have any of Apatow's fingerprints on it, yet, remains at heart, an Apatow film?  You get the Rapture-inspired comedy, "This is the End."  A film about friends, redemption, and a lot of jokes about cum.

Let me put this on front street;  "End" will not be for everyone, but it should be if you've seen any Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, or Danny McBride film, which I guess would mean that THIS film IS for EVERYONE!  Sure the humor is sophomoric, gross, and the conversations between the actors runs from inane, homoerotic, to, at times, philosophical, but what would you expect from the same guys that brought you "Superbad" and "Pineapple Express."

"End" revolves around a party at James Franco's new house where he's invited everyone from Kevin Hart to a coked-up Michael Cera (who steals every scene he is in). Between the cocaine lines, bong hits, and Capri Suns, The Rapture begins, sucking people into heaven in blue light, while sinners remain on earth.  A majority of the cast dies, but a small group, including Rogen, Hill, McBride, Franco, Craig Robinson, and Jay Baruchel,  survive and slowly turn on each other while trying to figure what to do in the now-post Ap

If you're looking for a plot and/or story, you're looking for the wrong thing.  "End" is clearly a comedy showcase from Rogan to Robinson.  Each actor gets their chance to shine and it's hilarious the watch even if you kind of know where the story is heading come the climax (that sentence is full of innuendo, but so is this film).  There will be some people in the audience that might feel divided about the humor, that ranges from potty-talk, to mean-spirited, but remember; it's comedy anyway you slice it, and unless you are simply someone with no sense of humor, you'll get a chuckle every few minutes.

What sets "End" apart from other Apatow fare, as well as any other comedy that's been in the multiplex lately is the film's take on celebrity.  "End" plays out more like a reality TV show, which might make you wonder; are these actors really like this in real life?  The answer is; maybe, maybe not.  Most of use are used to the characters that Seth Rogan, James, Franco, and Jonah Hill play in their movies; man-boys that smoke pot, have menial jobs, yet somehow end up for the better come the end of their films.  "End" takes this idea and puts it in some semblance of reality, yet all the actors are still playing a caricature of themselves from their films.  It's an interesting way to view the film when you think about whether these guys have slowly taken up a role in "real" life that they are known for from their films.  It's meta upon meta upon meta......

If you don't want to get that deep, that's fine, "End" is still the funniest movie that you'll see all year without a doubt, and that should be enough to get you're money.  However if that's not enough.....spoiler alert......the Backstreet Boys are in it.  Now if that doesn't make you want to pony up about 10 duckets, well, I'm sure you can still check out "The Hangover: Part III" at the dollar theater.

Fun Fact:  Over the course of their careers, The Backstreet Boys have sold over 130 Million records.  Suck on that N'Sync!

Barney's Version

Barney's Version: Touching

134mins/Drama/2010 IMDB link

Late one night I was surfing the channels on the good old TV in which honestly only shows nothing but pointless crap. Then I caught this film with only 15 mins left, It drew my attention so much I quickly found the next day it would play and scheduled it; with the single greatness advancement in the living room the DVR! Well it was a long time ago and I completely forgot about it, then one day boom there she is! There is that film one night that caught my attention.

So I watched it and its very good. If you might be looking for a film to watch I would say watch this film you wont be disappointed.

The film is about Barney, played by Paul Giamatti and his life. He is this extremely flawed man who has issues. He meets beautiful women who he ends up meeting (and marrying), including meeting a woman at his wedding and becomes caught so badly by her beauty. Barney's father is played by the wonderful Dustin Hoffman. No one really does what Hoffman can do, he steals every film he is in. Honestly when he pops up within 5 secs he puts a smile on your face. We meet Barney's friends as well as his other issues we as people go through. But the relationship with his father is my favorite part. I love this relationship where Dustin jokes around one moment and the next knowing and talking about his son's flaws then grabbing him with his words and pretty much saying I love you, I stand with you and I trust you.

You will see what I mean, lovely and funny stuff you just don't see much of anymore.

Side note: The makeup team has done one of the best jobs I've seen in years. Fantastic job on aging the actors!... Unlike this film.

Hyde Park on Hudson

Hyde Park on Hudson: Mixed

(2012) 94 min  -  Biography | Comedy | Drama

The film is good. I found it mixed thou, do to the films focus.

The issue here is we're presented with almost two different stories in a short 94 minute film. In the beginning we start with the relationship with FDR and Daisy (his sixth cousin) and that's fine. But then King George comes to Hyde Park (First time a King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited America) and that's fine too. But the two just don't seem to mix well. Sure the story between FDR and Daisy is okay, but to me the fun parts are with FDR and King George. Here we have two of the world's most powerful people, and they both have disabilities.

King George has issues speaking and FDR can't walk. At a time of world war this is a story that is simply amazing. So I found the relationship between the two a hell of a lot fun as these two men find out that they're more similar then they would of thought. Then the film goes back to Daisy and I just kept wanted it to head back with King George. This kept happening and I kept thinking why couldn't the whole film be about FDR and George. I enjoyed the way the film looked but the script I thought lacked focus.

Bill Murray was awesome. I really enjoyed him
playing that of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I also thought Samuel West as King George VI was good too. The rest of the cast was pretty good but like I said FDR and King George's relationship is the best thing about this "mixed" film.

Happy Holidays: Lawless Heart

Lawless Heart: Intriguing
2001, 99 mins, Drama

I'm really not sure how this film got under my radar for so long, but I'm glad I finally saw it.
The other day I got home from work early, figure I watch a film and I searched on demand high and low. I found something called Lawless Heart and started to read into it. The film stars Bill Nighy (Underworld) and Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean). Well I figure that is a damn good enough reason to take a look.

The story straight from IMDB contains, Three intersecting stories about people whose lives are affected by the death of a gay restaurateur.

The film starts off at the restaurateur's funeral, which becomes a key moment for all and you will come back to this and other moments throughout the film.

Films that warp time and connect stories of different characters, always grabs my attention. I really love to watch films like that. The reason I think I do so much, is the crew, when making a film like this creates a lot of detail both inside the story and visually throughout the film. When you have great characters  this becomes something that grabs me and keeps me around for each persons story and to me that can create a damn good film because we seem not to get that anymore in films.

Bill Nighy, in anything this guy does is simply great. He holds the screen and brings life to characters that you just don't get out of other actors. He is always someone I look for when I'm looking for a film to watch.
Tom Hollander stands out in this film in a good way. He plays Nick, the gay restaurateur's partner. He's character's story is quiet fascinating and intriguing in a way I never really see in a film.

All in all this is a wonderful acted and written film. I just wish we had more films like this come out more often. If you're looking for a film to simply sit and relax too, then you should check it out.

(The trailer is shit, but the film is really good)

Election Day Special: Dave

Dave: Unique
(1993, 110mins, Comedy)

Originally I was reviewing 1995's Nixon. I always thought it was a underrated film, one that was well acted and directed. But as I was watching it, I said it just the same old, same old. I wanted something I thought was unique. I then remembered the 1993 film, Dave. Here's a film that has no historic importance and is made up completely from the ground up.

The story is simple, the U.S. President has a stroke. He's now in a coma and the news is kept quiet. Why? Because this President was "getting around" and if this got out, it could be potentially a large scandal for the country. A temp agency owner who looks exactly like the President is now a part of this. He is put in the President's place to keep the scandal at a stand still with no one noticing any issues.

This idea in the end becomes a big back up plain that works perfect for the former and new President. The original President isn't a likable guy, in fact even the first lady doesn't like him. The new President is a likable guy. When he comes into the Presidency, he also in turn restores the Presidency. But the real pleasure of this film is the little pieces that not to many people notice. I tried to think of another film that centered around a President and it didn't even tell you his party. I think this might be the only one. This creates a generic President and the film doesn't get wrapped up into the two parties. This is something that doesn't happen much in films about politics, which make things even more enjoyable.

Kevin Kline shines in this film. (Like every film he is in)

Perfect in casting I would have to say.
And the rest is awesome...

Sigourney Weaver
Frank Langella (lovely evil!)
Kevin Dunn
Ving Rhames
Ben Kingsley
Charles Grodin
Laura Linney
Bonnie Hunt
Directed by Ivan Reitman

All around a perfect cast that stands out.

All in all this is a fun film to watch. It's even family friendly and one I think everyone would get a kick out of watching where all one guy wants only to do good for the country.

Easy Money

Easy Money: Joy
(1983)

Here's a film that I've always liked, why because it always brought me joy. Rodney Dangerfield is funny as hell. The story about Rodney who drinks, gambles and does drugs. His best friend is Joe Pesci...Yeah sounds good right?...It really is! His daughter is about to get married to a guy Rodney doesn't like. Rodney also doesn't like his mother in law, who pops in for the wedding. She is very rich and her and Rodney DON'T like each other! One night he gets a call saying the mother in law died. In the will, she states Rodney gets nothing unless he STOPS drinking, loses weight, gambling and doing drugs. Rodney must pick between the life he only knows or all the money a person could want.

"Yeah, well you where the inspiration for twin beds."

Im gonna stop there, because some great surprises in the plot come up that you need to see and not read.

"Why dont you two put your heads together and make an ass outta yourselves."

The ending is one of my top 10 endings in movies. As a viewer it hits you and it just works. That's all I will say on that, watch it because its a good film! Have a Rodney Dangerfield weekend you won't be disappointed.

Beginners

Beginners: Beautiful
(2010)

Put simply, Beginners is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in years.

It has been a long time since I have seen a film that hit a 10 on every level.

Directing ✔

Acting ✔

Story ✔

are all absolutely Beautiful.

The story is a unique one, which is nice to say. It has been a long time since a unique story like this has popped up on my "To watch list".  As well as a story that has character development!

So what is this story about? Well a son (Ewan McGregor) is told by his father that he is gay and has stage 4 cancer. A lot to take in for his son, who's own look on relationships has been stain by his fathers treatment of his own mother. The scenes between his mother and him, when he was young are heartfelt. Ewan also meets a girl at a party and is taken by her. She herself also has some parental problems. She also reminds Ewan of his own mother, in many different ways. The story of his struggle with life and its relationships to me are just flat out fascinating. Christopher Plummers performance is a joy to watch, as well as that dog that steals every scene he shows up in.

I tip my hat to Mike Mills. His writing and directing is simply beautiful. I look forward to his future projects.

Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult

Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult: Solid

Is the third and final film in a comedy classic trilogy...

"Well... We shot a lot of people together. It's been great. But today I retire, so if I do any shooting now, it'll have to be within the confines of my own home. Hopefully, an intruder and not an in-law, like at my bachelor party."

The Last Time we saw Frank Drebin?

After foiling the Evil energy companies plain to use a Dr. Mainheimer decoy and disarming a bomb. Frank got Jane back and decided he will retire from the police force and spend his time with Jane.

"Rocco could tell from my little escapade in the shower that I was well endowed... with courage."
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (Trailer)After retiring last time we saw him, Frank comes out of retirement to help Police Squad. This time he goes deep undercover to infiltrate terrorists who plan on using the Academy Awards to detonate a bomb. During this time Frank and Jane try to start a family as well as getting help with some problems this has brought up. Can Frank save the day, as well as produce a child for Jane? Let's watch and find out!

"Hey! You call this slop? Real slop has got chunks in it! This is more like gruel! And this Château le Blanc '68 is supposed to be served slightly chilled! This is room temperature! What do you think we are, animals?"

Sure, Naked Gun 33 1/3 is a bit weaker then what we come to aspect from a Naked Gun film, but it's still funny. It seems to be a very underrated film online when people talk about. I feel its better then people give it. It has it's issues and could never really be as good as the first one, that's a given. This film was Directed by Peter Segal and not David Zucker, so we have that going on. But it is still written by David and still has those great lines we all come to love with the Naked Gun trilogy. The issue with this film is the story. The weak "Bad guys" really felt like they just threw something together just so they could get the film made. The strongest part is just like every other time is the performance of Leslie Nielsen. But unlike films of today they did stop making these films and didn't keep trying. They simply stopped rehashing Frank and I give them credit for that. I won't lie, I would of like to seen a fourth one, but do to the passing of the comedy legend Leslie Nielsen I hope they never try to remake or create a sequel to this fantastic Naked Gun trilogy. And if someone tries too, trust me, they will have to go through me first...and the shit will hit the fan!
"They're going to blow that place sky high. It'll be a tragedy. Unless it's during a dance number."
Favorite scene in this film is a classic!
Nurse: "Do you need any help?"
Drebin: "Do you have Spartacus?"

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you...
What's your favorite scene?
"Look, baby. I am what I am, and I do what I do. A few guys make shoelaces, some lay sod, others make a very good living neutering animals. I'm a cop!"

And that's it! Every Naked Gun film, Do you agree they are all good, thou get weaker with each one?

Do you have a favorite?

The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear

The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear: Hilarious

Is the second film in a comedy classic trilogy...

"Well, send him plane fare and a new pair of pants."
The Last Time we saw Frank Drebin?
his best friend and partner, played by O.J. Simpson was in a coma after being shot 6 times. As he was investigate the shooting he stumbled onto a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II by Vincent Ludwig, played by Ricardo Montalban.
"Thank you. But, in all honesty, the last three I backed over with my car. Luckily, they turned out to be drug-dealers."
The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (Trailer)
Lt. Frank Drebbin is back! A new evil has popped up and its up to Frank to save the day! Both Frank and Jane are no longer together and a Scientist named Dr. Mainheimer is publishing a report on the future of energy. Evil energy companies like nuclear and oil decided to save their industries by replacing Dr. Mainheimer with a decoy who has his own report that will keep nuclear and oil at the front of the future of energy.
"There, there. You had no way of knowing the man you were dating was a vicious, murdering sociopath."
The smell of fear is a very good sequel to really a perfect comedy. It's tough to make another film when the first is a comedy masterpiece. But all said and done 2 1/2 is a funny film. It's a solid sequel that has great quotes, more O.J. and more action. I highly enjoy this film and highly suggests you watch this film especially if you haven't before it's that good. And let's hope you seen the first one since it's such a perfect film.

They really don't make funny films like this anymore!
"I'm single! I love being single! I haven't had this much sex since I was a boy scout leader!"
My favorite scene from The Final Insult is the Lion scene. I remember seeing this for the first time and when the lion comes out of nowhere and attacks, I fell to the ground out of my chair. The link of when Frank letting loose of all the animals at the zoo to the attack was so perfect it made me cry with laughter. Like the pee scene from the first film, this scene gets me every damn time!
"Oh, that would be me. I've been swimming in raw sewage. I love it!"

Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!: Hysterical

Is the first film in a comedy classic trilogy...

Like The Godfather Trilogy, Back to the Future and The Man with No Name Trilogy, The Naked Gun Trilogy
stands with that group as one of the greatest trilogies of all-time!
"It's fourth and fifteen and you're looking at a full-court press" In 1982 the television comedy series, Police Squad! premiered. It was the beginning of one of the greatest comedy franchises ever created. Sadly it only lasted six episodes, but it spawned the great Naked Gun trilogy.
"I've finally found someone I can love - a good, clean love... without utensils."
Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (Trailer)
is about a cop named Frank Drebin who comes back after his best friend and partner, played by O.J. Simpson is shot 6 times (missing ever vital organ) is now in a coma. Once he begins to investigate the shooting he stumbles on a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II by Vincent Ludwig, played by Ricardo Motalban. This film is one of the GREATEST COMEDIES of all time! Airplane is up on the list as well but like Airplane, Leslie Nielsen is the highlight of the film and in Naked Gun we get more of that. Leslie Nielsen is a comedy Legend and Naked Gun is the film that did it for me. Never has a film come as close.
"Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's *my* policy." When you watch this film you will laugh and laugh! The whole time you watch this film you will have a smile on your face. It's that good! In fact this form of comedy has been copied so many times I.E. the stupid Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie and Disaster Movie (can't believe I had to write those titles on this site, but I'm making a point) and they all failed at it. This franchise is one of a kind and yet it stands up today! It's still one of the best comedies of all time!
"Yes, he's in the intensive care ward at Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle."

I have so many favorite scenes in this film, but if I had to pick just one (which is tough)...

I'd pick the Press Conference Scene it gets me everytime!

What's your favorite scene in the Naked Gun?

Fanboys

Fanboys – Unexpected

Let’s face it; the three prequel “Star Wars” movies were disasters.  Films that pandered to 11 and 12 year old kids that lacked heart, and acting for that matter, so it might behoove you to believe that a group of friends would actually go cross-country in order to steal a print of “The Phantom Menace” and risk everything for a friend’s dying wish.  Well, it happened in “Fanboys” and to be honest with you, I enjoyed
almost every minute of it.

“Fanboys” is one of those interesting movies that was filmed well before it was actually released in theaters (all 12 of them), and featured a lot talent (Seth Rogan, Kristen Bell, Danny McBride) before they really got big.  The film is fluff, but it’s the type of fluff that makes you feel good inside and the characters are fun enough that that you actually enjoy the adventure that they are taking you on.

It’s not a perfect movie, but if you enjoy adolescent hijinks in the vein of “Adventures in Babysitting” or “The Goonies” then “Fanboys” will be right up your geek alley.  Also, if you’d like to keep the good times rolling, check out ‘Ready, Player One” the first novel by “Fanboys” screenwriter, Ernest Cline, it’s one of the best things written in the past five years.

Fun Fact:  Kevin Smith was supposed to cameo as Harry Knowles of “Ain’t It Cool News” but had to bow out at the last minute.

The Scout

The Scout: Curveball

It's a Baseball film. If your're a Baseball fan or comedy fan, I'm sure you will enjoy this film. There is a nice turn around where you find out a "dark" past which switches nicely from baseball to real life. Also a handful of cameos including George Steinbrenner, Bob Costas, Tony Bennett, Keith Hernandez and a few more. The story is that of King Kong which gives a nice spin on a Baseball film that we have never really seen before...Hey if you have sometime to kill, it's not a bad film to kill with. Plus it's always a win win Albert Brooks.
